Understanding Secondary Service Connection

Under 38 CFR § 3.310, a disability which is proximately due to or the result of a service-connected disease or injury shall be service connected. When service connection is established for a secondary condition, the secondary condition shall be considered a part of the original condition for all VA compensation purposes.

To establish a secondary service connection, a veteran must show:

A current medical diagnosis for the secondary condition.
An existing service-connected primary condition.
A medical nexus (link) establishing that the secondary condition was at least as likely as not (50% or greater probability) caused or aggravated by the primary condition.
